2017-05-31  NATURAL OBSERVATION DECK

My Sunday walking session brought me to that observation plateau on a hill in “Lainzer Tiergarten.” The way was steadily 5 miles upward, and my wife Karin and me were happy, that we have finally reached the peak of the hill, where we got that view as a reward. It was a bit windy, what we welcomed because we were sweating, we had underestimated the hot weather and were clothed too heavily.

2017-05-30  SWEDISH CROWN ON AN IRON FENCE

I wondered how long it was bright as day in Stockholm; this photo was taken at about 10 pm, no signs of dusk. This time combined with warm weather at about 27/80 C/F gave a new feeling how to discover the night. Here you see the royal palace. There was also a guard a the entrance, who had a gaze like most of the security guards. The building was lovely, but not so dramatic as the king’s palaces in London or Paris.

2017-05-29  TORONTO FROM MY HOTEL ROOM

This photo was the view from my hotel room in Toronto, cool, eh? The first thing before I unpacked my suitcase was to take an HDR shot of this modern building. I like the placement of the elements of the white building blocks. A good contrast to the gray background gives a sculptural, plastic look. I had to photograph through window glass, which I try to avoid, but the window was clean, so I gave it a try, and it worked out not so bad. 🙂

2017-05-28  BLACKBIRD FLY

Do you remember the Beatles song, “Blackbird fly, Blackbird fly…” 🙂  Some black birds were sitting on the observation deck of the glacier “Hoher Dachstein,” I used the opportunity to take some birding shots. They flew with high velocity, doing curves up and down, approached to descent flight, got straight up; I had to raise the shutter speed to get sharp pictures, you had to be very fast to follow them during flight.

2017-05-27  GREEN GOLF LAWN

At our company’s golf tournament in Adamstal, I was an onlooker. I don’t play golf and made the decision in advance, to rely more on photography. I took my camera and quadcopter and drove with the golf caddy between the courses to take some shots of the gorgeous green lawns and trees which encircled some golf courses. The weather was beautiful and hot, so I had to stop at the lodges for some drink and food, more often than I thought. 🙂  I had my friend Christoph with me, he is a wedding photographer and did some people shots with his Canon 5D Mark III. For me, it was an excellent opportunity to test the Samyang FE 14 mm 2.8 AF lens, which is a good and sharp wide angle lens.

2017-05-26  THE LAST SHOT BEFORE LEAVING BURANO

The three-island-hopping started with Murano, then Torcello and ended with Burano. That is this little fisherman’s village which is world-renowned, because of the colorful, neat houses built at the canals. We had 50 minutes to explore the city. Before leaving, on the railing of the boat, I did that last shot which shows Burano at twilight. It also signaled the end of a day, where I walked endless miles with my photo bag.  🙂

2017-05-25  THE ART MILE OF STOCKHOLM

Want to see impressive underground art metro stations? Then visit Stockholm and begin with the Blue Line and station Kungsträdgården, a joy to look at it and get inspired  🙂 All you need is a metro ticket, which I bought with my Stockholm Pass which you get with a Public Transport ticket combined, thoroughly recommended. Higher ISO or a tripod are required, then feel free to shoot. For the passengers it’s not a problem at all to get on the photos, they are already accustomed to it. 🙂

2017-05-24  AERIAL PHOTOS ON A SATURDAY

On a Saturday 2 months ago, I asked my wife to accompany me at a drone shooting session. We drove about 20 minutes outside Vienna, where it was “safe” to fly, without interruptions of neighbors or residents. Only some farmers looked up from their tractors  🙂 I had to drive slow on the stony country lane; I tried to avoid that stones jump against my car. Then I found a wooden table and bank near some trees, which was placed there for hikers as a relaxing area, here I could unpack the DJI drone and started to fly.

2017-05-23  PLAYING MUSIC IN A CHURCH

When entering this church in St. Gallen I was surprised that it was empty and only two music students were at the altar, a woman playing a cello, a man playing the clarinet. My wife was sitting down in the front rows to listen, and I went back to take a photo of this scene. Another memory of Switzerland which I had in my pocket, beside chocolate and cheese. 🙂

2017-05-22  TRAIN LIKE IN A WESTERN

In my childhood days, the westerns were my favorites; I liked John Wayne, Burt Lancaster, and Robert Mitchum. This train in Huntsville, Canada with the train driver reminded me of these movies, also the railway station where the train took off, had that flair. I think I should go now and have a look if Netflix has “Rio Bravo”  🙂
