2018-09-09   THE CHURCH OF WEISSENKRICHEN

By | 2018-09-08T20:45:58+00:00 September 8th, 2018|Austria|

On the photo is the fortified church of Weissenkirchen in Lower Austria. It’s a church with a castle wall and defensive positions, built in the medieval times, a mixture of church and ancient castle. The location is on a knoll, one of the higher points in the city, which underlines the position for defense against horse attacks and knight troops.

2018-09-03   WACHAU – UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE

By | 2018-09-02T10:50:28+00:00 September 2nd, 2018|Austria|

I took all the way up, to the higher levels of the wine gardens to get the magnificent view over the hills, the river Danube and the village called Spitz. The area is named Wachau and got its Unesco World Heritage status in 2000. When visiting, don’t forget to taste the excellent wines, like Riesling, Chardonnay, Weißburgunder or Grüner Veltliner. For the photo, I took handheld panorama shots, where I overlapped at about 30% to give Photoshop enough room tho photo merge. With this process, I always got good results, and Photoshop stacked the panos nicely.

2018-08-25   THE LANDSCAPE OF LOWER AUSTRIA

By | 2018-08-24T19:14:09+00:00 August 24th, 2018|Austria|

I started my DJI Phantom 4 Pro from the peak of the Manhartsberg. This mountain has a height of 500 meters, the highest pike in Lower Austria. I flew over wine-terraces and then entered that broad landscape of agriculture, fields, and woods. I caught the panorama with the built-in 20 MP camera of the drone. I had to be careful that I didn’t “touch” any villages; otherwise I could lose my flying-permission. I have to stay away from any residential complex for 150 meters.

2018-08-23   CRYSTAL WORLDS IN WATTENS OUTSIDE

By | 2018-08-22T20:53:37+00:00 August 23rd, 2018|Austria|

If you are in Tyrol, Austria I would recommend visiting the Swarovski Crystal Worlds. The exhibition area has an outside complex and interior viewing rooms. Andre Heller is the designer of the art installations and homogenous connected exhibits, galleries, and sculptures. You should plan a half day to get an overview and sufficient impressions of that art spectacle. To gain insight, I added a photo, more from the abstract side.

2018-08-17   STEEP SCARP OVER THE LAKES

By | 2018-08-15T20:55:27+00:00 August 16th, 2018|Austria|

You reach the peak of the Schafberg (“sheep mountain”  🙂 ) via a cog railway. On the summit, you get a 360-degree view of mountains, valleys, and lakes of Salzburg. I took a trail between mountain peaks to get some photos of the steep scarps. You have to be careful, the unprotected paths have on one side an abyss of hundreds of meters and on the other side steep rocks and alpine meadows. So I positioned with regard when taking the photos.

2018-08-13   CARS ON A WET STREET

By | 2018-08-12T08:04:28+00:00 August 12th, 2018|Austria|

The heavy rain caught my wife Karin and me. We flew into a historical building where we hid from the water masses. Inside we climbed a circular staircase until we reached the peak of the tower. There was a great view of the surroundings. I started to take some photos in the rain, no problem with a Fuji X-T1.

2018-08-12   INTENSE STARS

By | 2018-08-11T16:20:42+00:00 August 11th, 2018|Austria|

My ingredients for star-photography: a tripod, shutter speed at 15-20 seconds, higher ISO 800-1600, wide-angle lens and low f-stop, here I used 2.8. The photo was shot on a mountain plateau near Vienna, called Hohe Wand (“High wall”) where you have an unlimited view of the sky and no light smog of surrounding cities. The best receipt to get shots from a clear night sky with a vast amount of stars.

2018-08-10   A CHARTERHOUSE FROM THE AIR

By | 2018-08-09T20:24:55+00:00 August 9th, 2018|Austria|

The Charterhouse Mauerbach near Vienna was a summer residence of the Habsburg monarchy. My drone flying permission is Monday through Friday from 8 am to 6 pm, and Saturday from 8 am to 2 pm. That’s Austrian law; I got the permission from the Austro Control, which is the authority for all flying objects, from balloons to airplanes. I took that flight on a Saturday. Outside Mauerbach I found a perfect starting place on a plateau with natural, flat stones – my start and landing place.

2018-08-06   MOUNTAINS IN CARINTHIA

By | 2018-08-03T16:21:43+00:00 August 6th, 2018|Austria|

I was lucky that I could shoot the landscapes shots in Carinthia from an observation tower called Pyramidenkogel (pyramid-top). That was a good substitute for a helicopter (much more expensive) or a drone (you have to search after a place where flying is legal). I could turn to all four cardinal directions for my photos. I could catch many shots with my tripod, but the tourists brought the wooden floor into natural fluctuations, where I had to be careful when to shoot.

2018-07-30   DANUBE FROM ABOVE

By | 2018-07-30T19:07:36+00:00 July 30th, 2018|Austria|

I looked after an appropriate starting place for my DJI Phantom 4 Pro quadcopter. On a meadow between wine gardens I found it, and within five minutes I was ready to fly. The River Danube embedded in the beautiful landscape of the Wachau gave a likable motive for a drone photo. A historical and culturally exciting area with castles, ruins and old wine villages.
