2018-04-17   THE LAKE WITH THE PLEASANT SURROUNDINGS

The Wörther See is my favorite lake in Austria. The surroundings are pleasant, mostly mixed forest, one part with more conifers on the Northern side, the Southern side with more broadleaf forest and some rocks. I took a lake circumnavigation with a two-person electro scooter from Renault, named TWIZY. It was great fun, although the vehicle stopped at 70 km/ (45 mph), because the maximum speed was reached.

2018-04-12   THE DANUBE FROM ABOVE

Although it was windy, I took out my DJI Phantom 4 Pro. I parked at the roadside and went into the greenery to find a starting space. I found a very flat area near an irrigation path. It was a relatively short flying session, because of the wind but enough to take some shots of the Danube in the Wachau in Austria. This region reminds me of the Tuscany, with its terraces and viticulture, its trees and plants.

2018-04-02   SAILING ON A STEPPE-LAKE

Lake Neusiedl has a size of about 315 km2 (122 sq mi), and the lake is no more than 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) deep. It’s very popular with sailers and kite-surfers. At the shores you can find lake-restaurants, cafes and beaches to chill out and look at the flat surface of the lake.

2018-04-01   HEATHER END OF WINTER

The last remnants of the winter, snow on the scrawny grass, fog and cold wind gusts over a heather west of Vienna. You can feel that these are the last breathers of the winter before the spring season starts. I took that panorama-photo with my small Nikon Coolpix A (the pocket DSLR) and stitched the original three photos in Photoshop. Initially, it was planned to fly with my DJI drone. But a light drizzle prevented my intend, so I stayed with the standard hand-held shots.

2018-03-29   MODERN HOTELS

This construction reminds me of album covers from electronic music bands, like from the French band “Air” with the album “10,000 Hz Legend”. On the photo is the modern building addition to the hotel Schloss Velden. The original building looks like a renovated castle. Th hotel stands at the beautiful lake “Wörther See” which is renowned for its clean water which has drinking water quality.

2018-03-27   ENTRY HALL OF SPA STEGERSBACH

Austria has a vast amount of spas with thermal water and hot springs which you can visit in winter and summer months. Most guests take a 3-4 days package with half board. You will find indoor pools and different kinds of saunas, like aroma sauna, bio sauna, and steam baths. Modern styling and high-quality rooms add to this healthy and relaxing experience. I took that photo a the entry hall of Stegersbach Spa which lies in the federal state Styria.

2018-03-06   HUNTING CHATEAU ECKARTSAU INSIDE

After the music concert in hunting chateau Eckartsau in Lower Austria, my wife Karin was already in the courtyard to eat snacks and try a glass of Prosecco. I stayed some minutes on the first floor to take photos of the interior. Older castles with their generous rooms and ornaments are always good for photos.

2018-02-10   THE ALPS NEAR SCHLADMING

Armed with my DJI Phantom 4 Pro, I was walking about 4 miles uphill until I found a place, where it was safe to start the quadcopter. Trees and rocks were everywhere, I waited for a calm moment and launched a flight over the mountain chains. It was a bit troublesome; suddenly the DJI app showed me “Connection lost”:-o, the indicator bars were all red. My blood pressure raised. After 1-2 minutes the connection was regained, and I took a big breather, and my body temperature turned back to normal. 🙂 Finally, I got my shots.

2018-01-21   STARS AT THE HIGH SLOPE

The “Hohe Wand” – High Slope is a nearly vertical rock-wall with height at about 1,135 m (3,700 ft). Geographically it’s at the tail of the Alps, about one hour driving time away from Vienna. On the top, you are standing on a big plateau with a view over a broad landscape. At about 11 pm is the best time for star photography. Wide-angle lens, wide open, ISO 800-2,500. I used my Sony A7S and the Rokinon (Samyang) 14mm 2.8 AF lens.

2018-01-14   COMING UP FROM SWITZERLAND

With this chairlift, you are coming up from Switzerland, and at the exit, you stand at the “virtual” border between Switzerland and Austria at the Paznaun area mountains peak. Lunch in Switzerland and afternoon tea in Austria, a magnificent panorama and thin fresh air on a height about 3,000 meters (10,000 ft).
