2019-10-05 ANOTHER VIEW OF VENICE

I first marched the Rive degli Schiavoni westward, then took a side lane north. Then I found myself in another Venice; among other things, I could see long avenues lined with trees. In the end, I came back to the sea and could look at the Lido of Venice.

2019-10-03 VENICE WITH ITS NARROW STREETS

Venice offers a new surprise to every corner. We were on Google Maps and let us show the way back to the hotel. Often we got into narrow streets, with bars, hotels and old, morbid masonry — a city built for eternity. For the shooting I used my Sony A7S where I used ISO 10,000. No problem at all for this high-ISO wunder-camera.

2019-09-09 LIDO VENICE

Lido means the beach-area of Venice. You have to take a 20 minutes waterbus drive from Piazza San Marco. If you don’t want to sit on the beach the whole day, rent a bike and explore the island. From an old airport, landing stages which extend far out to the sea and bike lanes all over the place there is enough to explore, and time for many photos you can bring home with your camera.

2019-09-05 ENTRY DOORS IN VENICE

The photo shows typical entry doors in Venice. You are parking the boat before the house, jumping off and going directly in your anteroom. Where else in the world is this possible? Particularly unique design and interior surround every building.

2019-08-18 VENICE DURING A NIGHTLY WALK

I was walking with my wife over all the bridges, squares and alleys through Venice. It was stop-and-go traffic. Often I conflicted if I should stop again to take the next photo. Mostly the picture won. Over time, my wife turned on the mobile photography so that she could bridge the time well in addition to my photoshoots.

2019-08-08 CANALE GRANDE

The bustle at the Canale Grande. A group of photographers filled the bridge. It was challenging to find a gap; there were dozens of tripods in use. I took my Leica and made the photos by hand, trying to capture the mood on the channel.

2019-07-29 SEAVIEW FROM PIAZZA SAN MARCO

Venice in January, my wife’s and my favorite travel time. Fewer tourists, pleasant weather (though you will need a winter jacket) and the nightly Piazza San Marco with a clear sky.

2019-06-10 NIGHTLY WALK IN VENICE

My favorite activity in Venice, walking through the streets at night. After every corner, on the bridges always new surprises and photo opportunities. Better not to put the camera in the camera bag, you will always have it at the ready.

2019-06-06 THE FIRST DAY OF THE CARNIVAL

How to attend the opening party of the Carnival in Venice? It starts on a specific canal, best to let Google maps show you the way. To get a perfect view, you have to sit down on the embankment of the canal. The time was about 4 pm when we positioned ourselves; then we had to wait nearly 4 hours sitting on the cold stone and concrete ground with the feet swinging over the water. If you leave your place, the next waiting guests will occupy it. That’s the price you pay, for sitting in the front row. Remembering back, I can tell you, it’s worth to watch that great spectacle without hindrance.

2019-04-30 COMING HOME IN VENICE

My wife Karin and I arrived in Venice at about 5 pm. We parked our car in the San Marco garage, which we had booked online. I can recommend booking in advance, this garage is already on the island, from where you can go directly to the water-bus station. The 30-minute drive to the Piazza San Marco showed us the pink sky over Venice, with motor boats of Venetian residents on their way home. First I thought water busses are a bit slow, but in which city you can go from the outer areas to the center within 30 minutes? That’s pretty cool, no traffic jam, no traffic lights, no waiting time. 🙂
