2018-12-27   BORSA IN GENOA

Genoa was only a 1-hour train journey from Cinque Terre. My wife Karin and I took the opportunity to drive with Trenitalia. Genoa was in my mind as on old industry-city, but the opposite was exact. Magnificent buildings, full pedestrian streets and excellent food made for a fun afternoon. I could attend the Modigliani- and the Elliot Erwitt exhibition. A great painter and a great photographer on one day. 🙂

2018-12-26   FOR HORSE LOVERS

I was surprised, being in Edinburgh and never heard about “The Kelpies” before. My wife and I have seen it in a brochure on the breakfast table. Immediately the program for the day was clear. I stuffed all my photo-equipment in my backpack, and after an hour we arrived at the sculptures. The rain has stopped, only a few tourists, so I could fully explore and shoot these 30-meter-high horse-heads constructed from stainless steel.

2018-12-25   CHRISTMAS IN VIENNA

On the way home from the Software developers “We are developers – AI” conference I passed the Burgtheater an the “Wiener Christkindlmarkt”, Viennese Christmas-market. It was gloomy already. A good opportunity to try Google Pixels Night Sight feature. You have to activate it in the camera view. You’ll see a button “more” in the right corner. Photos with Night Sight require, that you have to hold your smartphone steady for some seconds and you can see a progress-wheel which shoots and calculates your picture. I think even many DSLRs have a hard time, to bring similar results hand-held.

2018-12-24   CHRISTMAS IN EDINBURGH

My wife, my kids and I had to wait in a long line. We needed tickets for an event in Edinburgh. I asked if it would be OK to walk around and take some photos during the waiting time. Soon I saw that Christmas-tree behind an iron fence. I had to set ISO higher, no chance to see a podium or parapet to place my camera since I didn’t have a tripod with me.

2018-12-23   FOUNTAIN IN CENTRAL PARK

I looked at many of the attractions in Central Park. Many of them I knew from the movies. First I visited the John Lennon Memorial, then I arrived at the Bethesda Terrace with the view to the Angel of the Waters fountain. I decided to make a black and white photo in post-processing, to make a difference to the hundred of Internet-photos which already exist of this attraction. I think it would be an exciting photo-competition: Bring new life to over-photographed sights!

2018-12-22   GALERY OF THE GLORIETTE

The Gloriette is a unique building with galleries on both sides and a little hall in the middle. It lies on a hill, on the opposite side of Schönbrunn Palace. The freshly renovated building is a touristic hot spot. I shot the photo from a not common angle. Therefore it shows a different perspective compared to the hundreds of already existing pictures from the Internet.

2018-12-21   WINTERWONDERLAND

The unexpected events often provide the most lasting memories. That was the case when visiting the adventure gardens in Langenlois, Lower Austria. We had an appointment for supper at 18 o’clock. Since we had 3 hours left, my wife went to nearby attractions. The Kittenberger adventure gardens turned out to be a winter wonderland. Fountains shone in bright, colorful light, garlands and fairy lights adorning the trees and shrubs. My Sony A7S got hot, from the many photos.

2018-12-20   SILENCE OF THE NIGHT

The two-day congress in Munich’s ICM was over; we were walking to the bus. I stopped and made photos of the modern architecture, with the warm lights in the nightly, dark sky. Such images remind me of electro-pop albums; the synthesizer sounds harmonize with the architecture.

2018-12-19   ICE COLD ICE

On the top of the glacier Dachstein, I visited an ice-tunnel exhibition. Some artists have made ice-sculptures with chainsaws, hammer, and chisel. The ice gets illuminated from different angles, with changing lights and intensity. Walking through this tunnel brings you into a dream world of ice and winter temperatures. For the sports enthusiasts, there are many ski lifts on the mountain.

2018-12-18   ITALIAN LIFE ON THE PIAZZA BRA

The Piazza Bra is the central plaza in Verona, with a fountain, pillars, marble floor and dozens of cafes and restaurants at the sideline. The typical Italian life, with tourists, people of all ages, surrounded by unique Italian architecture.
