2017-08-23  THOUGH THE STARS ARE OUT, NOT ONE OF US KNOWS THE WAY

“Though the stars are out, not one of us knows the way,” IMBECILE song text by Mike Batt. The “Hohe Wand” / high wall, a mountain near Vienna was the place for star photography last Friday. Our group of 7 photographers started at about 9 pm, and we did shooting until 11:30 pm. I had a head lamp with me; it was dark. And it’s also live saving  🙂 because near the sky walk; there are slopes which are straight as a pole with 100 meters / 330 ft height and no fence or sign ➡  which warns you. In the night, you have to be careful there. 😐

I placed my A7S with the Samyang 14mm F2.8 on my Sony VCT-300 tripod and prepared for shooting. Higher ISO about 2500 to 3600 are a must, shutter speed at about 12 to 15 seconds and manual focusing, which works fine even with the stars if you use Sony focus peaking. So I got beautiful shots of the milky way. 🙂

2017-08-22  HONG KONG FROM VICTORIA PEAK

There are two classical Hong Kong motives; one is the skyline shot from the Ferry Haven, often with a red junk on the sea, the other the skyline from Victoria Peak, both in the day- and night shot variations. What to do? Indeed, I shot them too, the classical skyline photos. The light was OK, some smog in the background, I used HDR to make it more pop.  🙂  However, Hong Kong is a metropolis and joy for every photographer.

2017-08-21  CORRIDOR AFTER CRYSTAL WORLDS EXIT

By leaving the exit door of the Swarovski Crystal Worlds exhibition, you go through that corridor which shows glass and crystal exhibits like full frame woman clothing,  animal sculptures like bulls or parrots, art antiques – all made of crystal. They are in boxes, lined with red velvet and lighted with LED lamps. The price tag is a bit from the higher side, so we stayed with a brio which had a crystal on its end, which we bought at the exhibition store.  🙂

2017-08-20  HARBOR OF LA SPEZIA

La Spezia is the entry door to Cinque Terre, in the city, there are brown direction signs which navigate you to the curvy, uphill street to Riomaggiore. Driving up the serpentines, I got great views of the harbor of La Spezia. I searched for a parking place, which I found at a private property on the opposite side of the street. After going out of my car, there was a dog which was barking like crazy; luckily it was behind a fence. 🙂  I crossed the street and was near a steep slope, where I had only 1 m / 3 ft for standing while shooting my photos.

2017-08-19  SUMMER OF LOVE WAS HERE AGAIN

Where else, if not in San Francisco? Haight street is the synonym for the Hippie-times, and this was the stage for the Summer of Love 50th Anniversary. Hundreds of market stalls and kiosks lined the street where you got (bio)food, colored clothes and hats, weed utensils and hippie souvenirs. Musicians were playing on the streets and balconies, a high street fest. It must have been great times back then. 🙂

2017-08-18  LAKE NEUSIEDL IN THE EVENING

Lake Neusiedl lies between SW Hungary and south-east Austria. This steppe lake is only 1.5 meters / 5 ft deep, has gray and muddy water. If you are standing in the water, your feet sink into the mud until half of your calves get covered. On the borders, the reed is growing. It’s a great area for kite-surfers because it’s flat with no waves usually. If a bigger storm is brewing, it’s better to get out of the water fast, if the wind kicks in, you will soon have huge waves which act like an undertow in conjunction with the shallow water.

2017-08-17  CANOLA FIELDS ON A SUNNY AFTERNOON

In this part of Lower Austria, I saw many, many canola fields. Maybe the biofuel of the future? I prepared my DJI Phantom 4 Pro for the flight, with some tests on the beginning. Because sadly I recognized from time to time that the movie touch on the DJI App didn’t get activated, although I thought it did, which led to some flying sessions, where I didn’t record a movie. Therefore it’s essential for me to check this carefully.

2017-08-16  PURPLE CHURCH IN NICE

It’s surprising how nice Nice is, the old town brings you photo motives at every corner, like that church with a purple steeple. And I had more time for photo shooting as I thought because my wife made a side trips for Pain Au Chocolat or Macarons. I also had a favorite sweet; it is called a Flan, made of creme caramel. 🙂

2017-08-15  ALEHOUSE SCHWEIZERHAUS

“Let’s have a beer, a cold Budweiser, a Paulaner wheat beer, a darker one? ” There is no better place in Vienna than the Schweizerhaus in the Prater. The orders come so fast that up to 10 people draw beer all the time. There are grills with hundreds of knuckles of pork, ready to be served. Every day there is a mood like a fair. Since the cold beer tastes special on hot days, you will see people with an unsteady gait in the later hours.  🙂

2017-08-14  ENDLESS TOKYO

This photo from the Skytree was a bit tricky to take. You have to shoot through glass with reflections of the interior lights and crowd at all windows. Most of the newer towers and high buildings are without open air observation decks. 😥 But for a view and photos at 450 m (1,480 ft), you have to take some hurdles. 🙂

The endless sea of buildings and houses in Tokyo is mind blowing. It remembers me of the song of the German electronic band Kraftwerk “Neonlicht, Und wenn die Nacht anbricht, ist diese Stadt aus Licht”, “Neon Lights, And as night falls, this city is made of light.”
