The Netherlands, that low country with endless fields of green grass, a paradise for sheep and cows. On my way to Amersfoort, I took some shots of these typical landscapes. Nearly every photo of this series included sheep or cows 🙂 A lovely scene.

I never saw a country which is so heavily flat as the Netherlands. I was driving on a house boat on the river Eem and took photos left and right and this photo is representative for most of the landscape around the river. No wonder that this is the country of Gouda, Edam, Beemster … 🙂 with all that fresh grass and healthy cows. 🙂
It’s not only Amsterdam were bikes are popular, they are popular in Amersfoort too. So we explored this city mostly by bike. In the night we placed them on a safe place and did a walking tour where we observed that also some canals trench this town.
The twilight at Veluwemeer shows you the sea, sinking sun with blue sky and some slow turning windmills and silence except a bit noise from some boats which come along the sea lanes. For a house boat captain, the evening is the time to look after a parking slot in one of the harbors at Harderwijk or Elburg to get a place to anchor the boat and prepare for the night.
The northern bays of the Netherlands show windmills which give a bit surreal picture, where everything is very flat, the sea, the green grassland, the only elevations are the windmills.
The Netherlands are really flat, I haven’t even seen a tiny hill. The grass looks really green and lush, clear water and nice surroundings with well built houses. Overall very nice to live there and have fun.
Amersfoort is a Dutch city with all ingredients for a beautiful day. Some canals, city wall, old town, Mondriaan exhibition, shopping street, beer pub and some cool dining destinations. Also really nice alleys, as shown on the photo here.
Wasserstrassen funktionieren wie Asphaltstrassen, es gibt Vorrangregeln, Ampeln und Querverkehr, der ist dann oft in Form von Brücken, die gehoben werden müssen, oder Schleusen die gesenkt werden. Bei den Brücken, die mit Ampeln bestückt sind hat man Glück, hier funktioniert dann alles elektronisch. Zeitweise stößt man auch auf Brücken, wo auf einem Schild nur eine Telefonnummer zu sehen ist und man dann den Schleusenwart anruft. Der kommt dann oft gemütlich per Fahrrad und hebt danach die Brücke. Diese Variante ist etwas zeitaufwändiger 🙂
Die Strecke nach Amersfoort mit dem Hausboot zu bewältigen wird zum kleinen Abenteuer. Die Zeitplanung muss stimmen um rechtzeitig einen Anlegeplatz zu bekommen, weiters sind noch Schleusen und Zugbrücken zu berücksichtigen. Die Wohnsiedlungen entlang des Eem wirken recht beschaulich, vor allem der direkte Zugang zum Wasser wird die Hausbesitzer erfreuen.
