2017-12-24   CHRISTMAS IMPRESSIONS FROM EUROPE

Different styles of Christmas impressions in European cities. What they all have in common is the beautiful lighting of the night. The first photo in Venice was handheld. I did this from a water taxi, where I waited for calm water, and at the same time, I was holding my breath to reduce camera shake. 🙂  For the second I used my tripod on the staircase to the Museum of Natural history. And the third happened after going out of a Christmas party in Malta. Here I shot also handheld and fast before the street was filled with people again.

2017-12-23   TRAFFIC IN HONG KONG

Footbridges are a good idea, I have seen them in many Asian cities. They keep the traffic flowing and reduce the traffic lights for the cars. Standing on a footbridge, I shot this photo with the traffic in Hong Kong. Handheld, because my son didn’t want to wait before placing the tripod. 🙂

2017-12-22   SNOWY SLOPE WITH TREES

Who has planted all that trees on this slope? Maybe it has been done to protect against avalanches or landslides. However, I shot this photo in the Dachstein-Tauern region. An area of the alps with mountains reaching 3000 m (9800 ft). Visiting the house on the picture requires a four-wheel drive at least or by feet endurance and snow boots. 🙂

2017-12-21   ENTRANCE OF THE ST. FRANCIS

I had an invitation on the 30th floor of the St. Francis in San Francisco. Some colleagues and I were on the way to the hotel. After entering the lobby, I took some shots. I like those big hotels with the massive pillars and the big, soft carpets. On the 30th floor, there was a bigger room, where you got a great view of the city. The windows reached from the floor to the roof.

2017-12-20   LANDSCAPE OF THE WACHAU

The Wachau is a valley in Lower Austria with old cities, castles, and ruins. That is also the region of the Nibelungen Saga. Myths of lost times about knights, kings, and conspiracies. Sometimes I walk with my parents up the hill to a castle ruin. There you get this great view of the landscape with the Danube in the middle.

2017-12-19   INSIDE THE ALPINE CHALET

After a horse-drawn carriage, which was guided by a Tyrolean-old hand guy, we arrived at an Alpine chalet in Filzmoos, Austria. We walked inside, wholly built from wood, with many carvings and knitted curtains and cushions. This furniture propagated real rustic mountain feeling. The food you get on wooden plates, drinks in big glasses with handle.  🙂

2017-12-18   THE WALL OF MDINA

Mdina is an old(built in 8th century BC), historical town in Malta with a population of 3oo. Surrounded by that massive city wall, for which an extensive reservation was undertaken in the last years. Mdina got some prominence in the Game of Thrones community. Some episodes have been filmed there. The Mdina gate and the Pjazza, Mesquita were shooting spots.

2017-12-17   GLOWING SUN IN CALIFORNIA

I could name this photo “Power of the sun.” The horizon tinted in a red and yellow glow, the sun was breaking through all cloud layers. A nature spectacle. 😎

I was so happy, that we made enough brakes on the California State Route 1 to San Francisco. Though I hadn’t the time to place a tripod, I did my best with handheld shots. The other teammates were no photographers, “only” smartphone shooters, which is way faster, then a composition and iso-aperture settings photographer. 🙂

2017-12-16   IMPRESSIVE WINE CELLAR

Schlumberger is a champagne producer in Vienna. The cellar-vaults are open to the public. There must have been used millions of bricks to build these constructions. Before entering, I asked if it is allowed to take photos. I got the permission and soon was ready with my tripod. I used the prime wide angle Sony Zeiss Distagon 24mm F2 SSM lens, which I mounted via LA-EA3 adapter on my Sony A7R II. The cool thing is that you get full autofocus with this adapter despite the fact that the glass is A-mount.

2017-12-15   LOBBY OF THE JUMEIRAH BEACH HOTEL IN DUBAI

Though we didn’t stay in that hotel, my wife Karin and I were allowed to use the beach. At 45° C (113 F) it was hot weather. 🙂  You were unable to walk on the sand without sandals. The sea water was like a warm bath. After two hours we left the beach and ran for cover at the pool bar. There was happy hour. We got a cold Stella beer for the half prize and a big bowl of wasabi nuts.
